Manaslu Base Camp Trek
Overview
Mount Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world, stands at 8,163 m (26,781 ft) above sea level on the ridge of Mansiri Himal in the Gorkha district of Nepal. Mount Manaslu is considered the “Mountain of Spirits” and is called Mount Kutun in Tibet. This peak is about 40 miles east of Mount Annapurna. On May 9, 1956, two climbers, Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, reached the summit. There have been several expeditions to Manaslu, but the previous expedition to Manaslu was not legally declassified until 1991. Since H.W. Tillman’s first expedition, Mount Manaslu has been popular with avid hikers, and the area is still restricted to limited groups, with only well-organized hikers in groups allowed to hike here. The Manaslu area is highly isolated, making rescue difficult.
